History of L&M brand began with Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company that lately has changed the name to Liggett Group. In 1998 Liggett Group has formed Vector Tobacco by signing Master Settlement Agreement. One year later, in 1999 Liggett Vector Company has sold their brands, such as Chesterfield, Eve, Lark and L&M to Philip Morris Company.
Till 2008 Philip Morris International made part of "Altria Group". After 2008 Philip Morris International separates "Altria Group" and becomes the biggest tobacco manufacturer in the world and the fourth biggest manufacturer of consumer goods.
So, Philip Morris International was taken out the holding in March 2008 and now Altria Group controls only American part of Philip Morris (called Philip Morris USA).
Altria Group is a holding of Companies with headquarters in Henrico County, Virginia.
L&M cigarettes have been first filtered cigarettes produced by Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.
History of cigarette filter begins from the day when in 1925 Hungarian M. Boris Aivaz has addressed to patent office to register patent on filter made of paper folded in layers and on machine for manufacturing such filters. Then Aivaz has addressed to investors (Bunzl family in Vienna) with proposition to start manufacturing filters of special paper. In 1927 when the necessary period of manufacturing process checkout has finished filter was introduced in cigarette industry.
Soon filter in Europe was started to be used namely for preventing tobacco from cigarettes getting in the smoker's mouth. However, at that moment filter hasn't received wide spreading in tobacco industry as there were no machines that could join tobacco column in cigarette with filter in such a way to make cigarette unbroken. Only in 1935 Britain Company has developed machine for joining tobacco column in cigarette with filter. First it was considered special product, while in 1954 it wasn't introduced wider under pressure of doctors and scientists.
From this moment began big changes that took place the next years in tobacco industry. New technology that was taken as basis of English machine work has made manufacturing of filters commercially profitable and as soon as appeared real offer, demand on new product began to grow quickly.
As cigarettes with filter have been considered "safer", from 1960th they dominate on the market.

To the end of 1980's the following trends have dominated on world cigarette market: in Japan and Korea were popular cigarettes with charcoal filter, in Thailand and Philippines smokers preferred menthol cigarettes, and European smokers preferred mostly cigarettes with low content of tar and nicotine and with double filter.
"Business Analytics" Agency has made a research according to which in the second quarter of 2007, in 25 Russian cities market share of Philip Morris brands has made 29.92% and this was first place. Among all Philip Morris brands, L&M cigarettes take first place and 2nd place among all other brands on Russian cigarette market after Winston.
