It must be said that Winston from the very beginning was a family Company. In Winston town was opened tobacco factory that manufactured chewing and pipe tobacco. Then RJR (Richard Joshua Reynolds) - it was the Company's name - decided to launch cigarettes and in these circumstances Camel brand appeared. R.J. Reynolds has taken high position on the market very quickly and has started marketing battle with giant "Philip Morris".
To win this battle something new had to be invented - and idea of filtered cigarettes was adopted from European tobacconists and cigarettes were launched under Winston brand. In order to keep the strength of filtered cigarettes, new method of tobacco mixture preparation was invented. This method has added new special flavor to Winston cigarettes and later was used in majority of American cigarette brands that gained popularity.
According to marketing legend new cigarettes appeared thanks to one of directors of R.J.R Tobacco Company Edward Darr born in Baltimore Maryland.
Edward Darr got job of assistant secretary in R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1920, in 1937 he obtained appointment of sales manager, in 1946 he became vice-president and hold post of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco president during 5 years from 1952 to 1957. During the last years of Edward Darr's life he holds post of vice-chairman of the board and acted as chairman of the executive committee.
Edward Darr having rest in Switzerland has faced filtered cigarettes that were gaining popularity in Europe. He tried and liked them. Inspired by new trends he came back to States and has convened council of R.J.R. experts. They have thought, smoked and decided that American consumers will like this new feature. The main thing was to allow smokers continue taking pleasure of the cigarettes' strength and flavor.
In 1954 Company took leading position on sales thanks to new products - they have started assembly line production of cigarettes with filter.

And in 1956 these cigarettes were declared the most successful tobacco brand. And it is no wonder as during that year have been sold 31 billion of Winston cigarettes. But manufacturers were not going to rest on their laurels. Advertising images that were based on necessity in family comfort and new types of products, for example Winston 100 mm helped to increase sales. In 1966 Winston has adopted idea of Pall Mall cigarettes and started to produce long cigarettes that have been actively promoted on TV.
In 1974 Company launches new type of Winston cigarettes - Winston Lights. In 1970's quality tobacco under Winston brand got appreciation not only in USA, but in entire world.

In 1980's Winston cigarettes were the most sold cigarettes in Puerto Rico. It is considered that this success was a result of advertising campaign that was made under motto: "Winston y Puerto Rico: No hay nada mejor" that is translated as "Winston and Puerto Rico: There is nothing better". Another reason is that Winston cigarettes here were associated with "salsa sensual" or "salsa erotica" movement.
